While one of the first beers ever made was in ancient China in 7000 BC, Mesopotamia (the modern-day Middle East) is also a big part of brewing history. Sumerians, Babylonians, and Assyrians in the area are believed to be among beer’s inventors.
However, it was the Egyptians who documented their brewing methods, allowing historians to discover them centuries later. This documentation also allowed future generations to recognize how much beer was appreciated in ancient times, as it was viewed as both a special-occasion libation and an everyday drink. It was so important that it had a place in the Egyptian afterlife and was preserved in some tombs of the affluent.
Drinking a beer with a straw might warrant side-eye in a present-day pub, but the Sumerians invented straws (or drinking tubes) especially for beer. This invention could have been due to people drinking from large vats (rather than individual pints) or as a way to avoid the fermentation particles that tended to float to the top.
The brewing industry of today is male dominated but this wasn’t always the case. Women were once the beasts of yeast, brewing beer for religious ceremonies and as a way to provide calorie-heavy drinks in times when food was scarce. The tide began to turn during the 16th century when the Reformation forced women into subordinate roles and led some female brewers to be accused of witchcraft.
When it comes to beer, the Czech Republic wins the drinking contest; it has more beer consumption per person than anywhere else in the world. However, China consumes more beer as a nation due to being home to the largest population. On an annual basis, China drinks twice the amount of beer as the US.
