While hiking in winter is doable, it’s not a favorite activity among those who dislike snow or frostbitten toes. Spring, on the other hand, gives all types of hikers a chance to emerge from their living rooms and enjoy Mother Nature under the Colorado sunshine. If you live in Longmont, you don’t have to go far to find a terrific trail. Several are located nearby, including the following:
The Lagerman Agricultural Preserve offers an ideal hike for those who enjoy bird watching while they get their steps in (there’s a seasonal osprey nest on site). There are two different hikes to choose from, with both described as easy. If you’re looking for a short outing, opt for the 1.6-mile jaunt. The 4.9-mile trek takes approximately two hours. Dogs are welcome, as long as they’re leashed.
The Lobo Trail is shorthand for the Longmont-to-Boulder Regional Trail. While it breaks into many shorter trails, some people opt to hike the entire thing (as long as they have six or so hours to kill). This 12-mile system stretches from Longmont to Boulder and goes through Gunbarrel and Niwot. It has a few on-trail restrooms so don’t skimp on drinking plenty of water.
The East Boulder Trail at White Rocks is a five-mile hike out and back. It features spectacular views of Indian Peaks and the Boulder foothills, as well as tons of frolicking wildlife. The White Rocks Nature Preserve is home to deer, bats, turtles, snakes, raptors, ducks, coyotes, foxes, and more.
The Coot Lake Trail is an ideal option for those who want a quick hike that can be completed in under 30 minutes. This 1.3-mile loop offers opportunities for bird-watching, photography, nature gazing, and trail running. It’s surrounded by water, wildlife, and wildflowers.
The Niwot Loop Trail is a fairly easy route but takes most people over an hour to finish. This 3.4-mile loop is open all year and a popular spot for hikers, runners, and bikers. It’s a bit unique in that a portion of the trail weaves in and out of residential areas, but it’s a beautiful option nonetheless. Hikers recommend keeping the map handy as the trail markers tend to be confusing.
Hiking doesn’t have to involve a day-long commitment and a 14er. Some of the best hiking in Colorado can often be found in your own backyard.
