Fun Day Trips from Longmont, Colorado

Getting away doesn’t have to mean going far away; some of the best escapes are just around the corner from Longmont. If you’re looking to get out of town for the day, consider venturing to these nearby locations:

Wild Animal Sanctuary

The Wild Animal Sanctuary is about 40 miles from Longmont and covers over 700 acres. It is home to animals rescued from abusive conditions (including circuses), and visitors can view these mighty beasts from an elevated walkway that winds through the habitat. The sanctuary's animals include African lions, wolves, bears, tigers, camels, and emus.

Eldora Ski Resort

Eldora Ski Resort is perfect for skiers who want to hit the slopes without dealing with the drawbacks of the mountains. Covering over 680 acres of terrain, it features green, blue, black, and double-black runs. It’s also well known for its terrain park, which allows skiers and snowboarders to play and perfect their craft on boxes, rails, jumps, and more.

Lyons, Colorado

Lyons, Colorado is 12 miles from Longmont and a charming, tiny mountain town packed with mom-and-pop restaurants, boutiques, shops, cafes, and galleries. It’s also home to a pinball museum and the original Oskar Blues Brewery if you want to hail the ale.

Casa Bonita

We never knew what Casa Bonita meant to us until it threatened to leave. Known for its sub-par Mexican food (not you, sopapillas), cliff divers, arcade, live entertainment, and music, this pretty house is the quintessential place to take out-of-town guests. Since its reopening, reservations are required, so plan ahead if you decide to go.

Clear Creek County

Clear Creek County offers all sorts of activities depending on the season. In the winter, you can go snowshoeing, snowmobiling, skiing, ice skating, or sledding. If you want something that does not involve the risk of frostbite, consider touring the mines or taking a dip in the hot springs.

Whether you’re looking for an outdoor adventure or indoor fun, a day trip might be just what you need. Fortunately, several short trips near Longmont will surely deliver a grand time.
