DIY Self-Care Ideas

In our modern landscape of connectivity, immediate responses, extended workdays, and constant information, it can be difficult to slow down, focus on the present, and indulge in a little self-care. However, it’s crucial to take the time to dip out, power down, and recharge. Self-care doesn’t have to be expensive, but it does have to focus on you. Here are some simple DIY self-care ideas to partake in when winter seems just a little too long.

Take a Luxurious Bath

There’s nothing like a steaming hot bath — complete with scented bath salts and glowing candles — to warm cold, tired bones. Turn off your cell phone and grab a good book. Draw a piping hot bath and spend the afternoon soaking in the comfort of your home. The hot water, soothing candles, and relaxing scents will easily cause stress to slough away and prep you for a night of easy slumber.

Practice a Guided Meditation

Mindfulness is a self-care practice that may extend well beyond the hours you’re investing in the actual process. Meditation and awareness help bring us into the present and release future stressors. There are ample guided meditations online led by gentle-voiced coaches that focus on an array of subjects. From self-actualization to letting go, there’s a meditation perfect for any self-care Saturday.

Waste Time

In our fast-paced world, we are often under the impression that it’s costly to waste time doing something unproductive. However, it can be most productive in the long run to dedicate time to simply doing nothing – or nothing productive at least. Binge a season of your favorite show on Netflix. Call a friend, take a walk, read a book – basically, do whatever mindless task brings you joy, even if it doesn’t set you up for checking items off your to-do list. It’s still important.

Organize and Declutter

Certain self-care activities have the power to release us from anxiety and set us up for success professionally and personally. Winter is a great time to purge your closet, cabinets, and drawers of unnecessary and unneeded items. Spring is just around the corner and less clutter means an easier spring cleaning!

Cook a Beautiful Meal

Find a recipe that ignites your inner chef and source the ingredients from your local market or coop. Investing in beautiful, sustainable fruits, vegetables, and meats will make your dish sing. Pour a glass of wine or brew a cup of tea while you chop, stir, baste, or roast your way to a delicious, Instagram worthy meal. More of a social butterfly? Invite friends over to partake in a low-key dinner party.

Self-care isn’t just about treating yourself to expensive items, although this isn’t a bad way to go about it. Pampering and catering to your physical and mental being is crucial to relieving stress and tension from everyday life. These easy, DIY forms of self-care carry serious mood-boosting abilities and don’t cost much at all.
