Forget about the self-driving car; the self-cleaning apartment is where technology should focus its energy. But until that happens in some Jetsons-like future, it’s up to you to keep your place neat.
One of the easiest ways to do this is by making a cleaning checklist that lays out your tidying to-dos. Consider adding the following:
Most homes have a few neglected areas and chances are that yours is no different. Take inventory of any nook and cranny that you often ignore and add it to your list. This might include closets, bathroom drawers, light switches, or appliances. Ceilings are commonly neglected, as well, and a favorite hangout for cobwebs.
Windows
Windows are another overlooked area of most apartments. While you might not be able to clean the outside (depending on your floor), squeegeeing the inside removes dirt, grime, and finger smudges. If you have children, your windows are probably full of tiny handprints. Make sure to wipe down the sills and the tracks, too; the latter is usually a buffet of filth.
Okay, testing your smoke alarm isn’t technically cleaning (unless you dust it, as well). Still, adding this item to your list is always a smart idea. You don’t need to check your alarms every time you clean, but getting in the habit of checking them every three or four months could be a lifesaver. Don’t forget to check your carbon monoxide detector regularly, as well.
Baseboards
Few cleaning chores are as dreaded as scrubbing the baseboards (if you don’t have a backache yet, just wait: you will!). Even though they’re a pain, baseboards tend to take the brunt of anything you bring in from the outdoors, making cleaning them a necessary evil. For an easier process, consider a tool that keeps you from having to bend over.
Bathrooms are typically among the dirtiest places in any home. From globs of toothpaste to blobs of hair gel, counters, floors, and even doors are regularly covered in goo and gunk. That’s why your bathroom should always be included on your cleaning checklist. Scrub the toilet, the mirror, the sink, and the inside of the tub. Don’t forget the floor, either; getting it wet during your shower doesn’t count as mopping.
Unfortunately, small spaces won’t always translate to small messes. But making a checklist and sticking to it is a simple and efficient way to tame disorder one rabid dust bunny at a time.
