Winter Wellness Tips

For many, the winter season, with its shorter days and colder weather, can lead to more time spent on the couch, more junk food meals, and the forming of other less-than-ideal habits if you aren’t careful. Not to mention, winter generally signifies the onset of cold and flu season, and the cold temperatures and lack of daylight can have a significant impact on your physical and mental health on top of that. As we leave the excitement of the holiday season behind us, here are a few practical wellness tips to help you stay healthy through the winter season.

Maintain a Healthy Diet

With winter weather and shorter days, it’s likely that you’ll inevitably find yourself spending more time indoors than you would in the warmer months. Since the quality of your diet is a key component of your overall wellness, it’s even more important to make sure the diet you are maintaining is a healthy one. Instead of opting for takeout or processed meals, choose fresh fruits, vegetables, and plenty of whole grains. For a list of delicious and healthy winter recipes, click here.

Stay Hydrated

While it may come as a surprise, most people’s overall water intake is generally lower in the winter months. However, it’s important to make sure you are drinking enough water each day - especially in the winter season. Proper water intake has been shown to have numerous health benefits such as immune system support, higher energy levels, and may help with a clear complexion.

Check Your Indoor Air Quality

Since people generally spend more time indoors during the winter, it’s important to ensure your indoor air quality is up to par. Poor indoor air quality can leave you breathing in a variety of pollutants and allergens that can negatively impact your health. A few simple ways you can improve your home’s air quality are vacuuming regularly, changing your A/C filters, and regularly washing your sheets. Some people recommend adding some plants or even an air purifier to your living space in the winter months.

Stay Active

While it can be more difficult to be active outdoors, it’s still important to ensure you get at least 30 minutes of physical activity each day. Consider adding yoga or some at-home workouts to your routine. Or, if you’re looking for a little adventure, think about participating in winter sports such as skiing or snowboarding. Either way, it’s important to not become sedentary during the winter season.

The choices and habits you make play a critical role in your overall health and wellness. Fortunately, these simple wellness tips can help you ensure you maintain a healthy lifestyle amidst the seasonal lows that come with the winter season.
