Winters in Colorado are often synonymous with the likes of Vail, Breckinridge, and Copper Mountain. But you don’t have to leave town to have yourself a holly jolly good time. There are plenty of local destinations that allow you to synergize with the season without spending hours stuck in traffic. Consider the following:
If you want to hit the slopes without hitting rush hour, consider venturing over to Eldora. Located in Nederland, Eldora offers all the amenities of a ski town right in your backyard. A great place for families, it features dining, shopping, and 40 kilometers (25 miles) of trails.
For those who love Mother Nature unconditionally, no matter how she’s behaving, St. Vrain offers winter camping (yes, that’s a thing!). It has 40 reservable campsites that allow tents or RVs. Sites on the south side offer heated water, sewer and electric hookups, while the north side offers electric hookups, but water hydrants are shut off.
There’s no need to perform a toe loop at the Longmont Ice Pavilion at Roosevelt Park; all skill levels are welcome. Open seasonally, it features drop-in hockey games, public skating hours, and party rentals. If you don’t know how to skate at all, don’t worry; the rink offers lessons, too. Plus, you’re never too old to use an ice skating trainer (because you’re never too young to break a hip).
The Ron Stewart Preserve is the perfect place for hiking and exploring during warm summer months. Come winter time, snowshoeing takes center stage. Lace up your shoes (well, technically, buckle them) and head for the (sort of) hills! Snowshoeing is a fantastic cardio activity that burns tons of calories and gives you plenty of reason to go back for seconds at your holiday parties.
Okay, the Warrior Playground doesn’t exactly offer snow-centric activities, but it makes our winter destination list because not everyone loves the idea of being outside during frigid temps. If you have a kid who needs to burn off some energy while you stay nice and toasty, this gym is a must-visit. Of course, you can also abandon the sitting area and tap into your inner ninja, instead.
You don’t have to go to the mountains to enjoy cold-weather fun. Longmont offers plenty of places for winter wonderland wanderers to frolic. Get out and have yourself a (snow)ball.
