2019 marks the 150th anniversary of the Boulder County Fair. As the oldest fair in the history of Colorado, this celebration in Longmont is sure to draw a crowd. For the 3rd year in a row, the county fair will also host the Firefighter Combat Challenge, celebrating first responders and showcasing their athleticism and skillsets. Here’s what you should know about the event.
The Firefighter Combat Challenge takes place 8/2 and 8/3, with events occurring at various times throughout each day. The opening ceremony kicks off at 5:30 pm on 8/2 and concludes at 6:00 pm on 8/3. A full schedule of events may be found here.
The event takes place at the Boulder County Fairgrounds in conjunction with the Boulder County Fair. The Firefighter Combat Challenge travels around the country hosting 25 competitions throughout the year. Firefighters from around the state and country will be in attendance and will no doubt enjoy a little friendly rivalry with neighboring departments.
Firefighters must be in excellent shape to execute their duties safely and effectively. The Challenge encourages physical fitness amongst fire departments and offers a friendly, competitive arena to showcase talents and athleticism.
Over the course of two days, fire departments from around the country will race head-to-head to complete various challenges that are both physically demanding and mentally straining. Not only must competitors run, duck, jump, pull, and climb — they must do all of this while wearing full bunker gear and a breathing apparatus.
Each event resembles real challenges that firefighters must overcome in the line of duty. Competitors will race up a five-story building, perform a man-down rescue, drag and hoist fire hoses, and more.
The Firefighter Combat Challenge includes a kids’ course with mini-events resembling the adult challenge course. Check out the course map here.
Unless we have loved ones that are firefighters, police officers, or members of the military, it’s often easy to forget how much these individuals must endure both physically and mentally on a daily basis while doing their jobs. Events like the Firefighter Combat Challenge invite the public to connect with their community heroes and see them in action, on playful terms.
