Getting away doesn’t have to mean boarding a plane, digging into your savings, and taking a leave of absence from work. If you live in Longmont, there’s a weekend adventure somewhere nearby. In fact, this area is full of things to do and experiences to be had. So, pack a bag, hit the road, and head to these wonderful destinations:
One of the main reasons to visit Glenwood Springs is to take a dip in the town’s natural mineral waters. But you don’t need to be a sucker for sulfur to adore this town. You can also hike Hanging Lake, take a rafting trip down the Colorado River, or visit Doc Holliday's grave (and other historical hotspots). Glenwood Cavern’s Adventure Park is a good option, as well, especially for anyone who's an adrenaline junkie or honoring a double dare.
If you want to stay close to home, Estes Parks is an excellent choice; it’s right around the corner from Longmont (okay, a few corners). While the town is no slouch during the winter months, spring and summer are when it shines. The entire area looks like an outdoor lover’s vision board, with hiking, fly fishing, tubing, ATVing, and horseback riding opportunities seemingly everywhere. If you’ve got a hankering for something more casual, spend the day walking the shops of Main Street or exploring the Stanley Hotel. You just might take a shining to it.
Garden of the Gods is a National Natural Landmark located near Colorado Springs. It’s full of 300-foot sandstone rocks, postcard-worthy views of Pikes Peak, and all kinds of activity. You can hike, bike, rock climb, go horseback riding, or choose from several types of tours (trolley, jeep, segway, self-guided, e-bike). It’s one of the best places in the state to take little ones and your camera.
The Great Sand Dunes National Park is a 4.5-hour drive from Longmont, depending on metra area traffic. This preserve offers the chance to go sledding in 70, 80, and 90-degree temperatures. Among the area’s most unique features is its accessibility: it’s open 24 hours a day, seven days a week (no timed entries or reservations required). Stop by on a cloud-free night for an exceptional star-gazing opportunity.
When it comes to tourist destinations, Cheyenne, Wyoming isn’t likely to make it to the top of a lot of lists, but that doesn’t mean it’s not worthy of a weekend stopover. Come take an old-fashioned tour of the city atop a red trolley, explore the botanic gardens, visit the Wyoming State Museum, take in the views down Happy Jack Road, or visit the Terry Bison Ranch (which prides itself on having the only bison train tour in the nation). If you visit anywhere near July 4th, you’ll also have plenty of chances to see what real fireworks look like.
Whether you’re hoping to learn about history, shop til you drop, or play around in Mother Nature’s playground, a special destination is just a few hours away. When you live in Longmont, it’s easy to make every weekend one to remember.
