Hosting visitors this holiday season? This endeavor can be more challenging than it seems, especially if it’s your first time welcoming guests for the holidays. You don’t need to go overboard with décor and menu options to show your visitors a great time—the smallest details often make a noticeable difference. To create a fun and stress-free environment, consider the hosting tips below.
Prepare the Guest Accommodations
No matter where your guests will be staying during their time with you, it’s important to prepare the space. While it may seem like enough to make the bed and give the area a quick de-cluttering session, you can go above and beyond by setting out a laundry basket and luggage rack. In addition to providing amenities in the room, be sure to stock the nearest bathroom with extra towels.
Provide a Quick Tour
If your guests will be staying overnight, give them a quick tour and how-to demonstration. Appliances can be a bit tricky to navigate, so you can save your visitors from frustration by showing them how to use the shower controls and washer and dryer settings. Spending a few minutes on a brief tour is a great way to help them feel comfortable and welcome.
Monitor the Temperature
While you may be accustomed to keeping the thermostat at a certain temperature, most homes quickly heat up when the party gets started. To keep your visitors from feeling uncomfortably warm, keep an eye on the temperature and lower it when necessary. If cranking up the A/C isn’t enough to cool the space down, open a window if the weather is nice.
Stock Up on Extras
If guests are traveling from out of town, they may forget commonly left-behind items like a toothbrush and toothpaste. To be on the safe side, consider purchasing an additional set of these essential toiletries, or opt for travel sizes. If your visitors unpack and realize they’re missing something, it’s a big stress-reliever to find an extra on-hand.
Offer Some Time Apart
The holidays are a wonderful time of year for catching up and spending quality time together. However, both the host and visitors can burn out if there’s not enough down time. While you’ll probably want to spend lots of time with your guests, it’s just as important to allow some time apart if they’re staying for more than a couple of days. If you or your visitors need a bit of space, recommend a few of your favorite hot spots around town or offer to run errands while they’re resting.
