Looking forward to celebrating fall? DIY crafts are a great way to get into the spirit of the season and enliven your living space. Here, we share a few of our favorite autumn-inspired crafting options that are perfect for creating on a relaxing weekend.
If you’ve always wanted to try your hand at whipping up homemade soap, this pumpkin pie soap is an excellent place to start. The finished product will look beautiful displayed in your home and would also be an excellent gift. For this project, you’ll need two pounds of white soap base, soap colorant in yellow, orange, and brown, pumpkin pie soap fragrance, a 6 or 8-inch round silicone cake mold, hairspray, electric mixer, and ground cinnamon. You’ll begin by melting the soap base in the microwave and stirring in the yellow and brown colorant until the mixture is a light tan color. Then, add in pumpkin pie fragrance and carefully pour into the silicone mold. Spray with hairspray immediately to remove air bubbles and allow the soap mold to harden. In a separate bowl, melt more soap base and add yellow, orange, and brown colorants until the mixture is a deep golden orange. Add fragrance and stir, then pour the orange layer on top of the tan layer and repeat the hairspray step. When completely hardened, remove from the mold and use a sharp knife to cut the “pie” into eight slices. To make the whipped topping, melt six ounces of soap base into a separate bowl and allow to cool slightly. Next, use the electric mixer to create a thick and fluffy texture. Working quickly, mold the whipped soap into dollops and top the “pumpkin pie” slices. Sprinkle with cinnamon and allow to set.
When you need a creative way to display your favorite Halloween candy, this DIY candy jar may be just what you’re looking for. Start by painting the outside of a 6-inch terracotta pot with paint (glossy spray paint is a good choice). Be sure not to paint the inside of the lid, as this part of the pot will make contact with the candy. Glue a glass jar to the pot with industrial strength glue and place a heavy object, such as a book, on top until completely dry. Next, hot glue the knob to the terracotta saucer. Finally, tie a ribbon around the base of the jar and stick spooky stickers to the pot.
Pumpkins decorated with fall foliage are a fun twist for displaying in your home or outdoors. First, collect an array of leaves that you’d like to affix to the pumpkin. Next, spray the pumpkin with white spray paint and begin to map out the leaf pattern as you wait for it to dry. After the paint is dry, apply a coat of glue to the pumpkin and arrange the leaves however you’d like. Top it off with a final coat of clear glue, and if desired, paint the pumpkin stump glittery gold to add some sparkle.
