Warming temperatures and longer days are pulling all Coloradans back outdoors. With new “safer-at-home” measures in place in many Front Range counties, residents can feel comfortable venturing outside to enjoy hiking trails. However, since so many are working remotely and the majority of local amenities are temporarily closed, hiking trails are suddenly teeming with people. Here are some lesser-traveled hikes to help you get outside, safely.
Located just outside of Copper Mountain, this lesser-visited hiking trail is well worth the drive. The trail is a 5.9 mile out-and-back adventure that slowly climbs through pine forests until releasing hikers out into a picturesque bowl surrounded by a ring of mountains. The valley fills up with wildflowers during June and July, and the trail is just as packed with hikers looking to witness nature in all her glory. However, for those willing to don some micro spikes and bundle up, Mayflower Gulch is pretty quiet in the spring.
When seeking epic adventures, we tend to head west toward the picturesque mountain towns of Summit County and jagged, soaring peaks in Colorado’s southwestern sector. However, many fail to realize that beautiful mountainous terrain lies just a short drive outside of Fort Collins. Nestled in Red Feather Lakes you’ll find the gentle Lady Moon Trail. It’s closed to bikes and vehicles from November 1 – June 30, making it the perfect place to quietly amble along the rugged terrain.
Just 25 miles outside of Greely awaits the natural wonder that is Pawnee National Grasslands. Visions of our great state coincide with the Rocky Mountains, roaring rivers, and lush meadows. However, in the eastern sector of our state sits a remarkable swath of grassland, pockmarked by colorful buttes. Much of this area is open for hiking, biking, stargazing, and camping. All visitors need to do is park and wander for a truly unique look at our state’s diverse landscape.
Nestled in the Comanche Peak Wilderness area lies this picturesque alpine lake and its corresponding trail. At 7.9 miles roundtrip, it needs to be started early. During peak season, this trail is moderately trafficked at best. As of this writing, hikers should wear sturdy, all-season footwear and pack micro spikes as the final climb to the top can be icy, depending on recent weather. While this is a difficult hike, the reward of stunning valley views from the shores of an alpine lake is well worth it.
This short but steep trail just outside of Evergreen puts avid hikers to the test while giving them a real workout with rewarding views. At only 3.1 miles roundtrip, this hike can be done in an afternoon. Early mornings see less traffic and micro spikes are usually needed through May. At the top, hikers can spread out and catch stunning, panoramic views of the Rocky Mountains from many outcroppings.
Colorado is teeming with outdoor recreation and fortunately for us, we have access to many renowned hiking trails, walking paths, and open space. Stay sane during the “safer-at-home” orders by visiting one of these trails. Be sure to maintain social distancing guidelines and wear protective gear, especially if you’ll be coming into contact with others along the journey there.
