Last Minute DIY Halloween Costumes

With October 31st just around the corner and a whole host of other autumn activities on the calendar, it’s tricky to find the time to create an awesome Halloween costume. Fortunately, there are some easy last minute DIY options you can whip up in an afternoon and still be the bell of any local ball you decide to attend.

Scarecrow

Create a spin-off of one of the most beloved characters from Wizard of Oz and make your own scarecrow costume. Grab an old flannel, some jeans, and a couple handfuls of hay. Sew scrap cloth onto the elbows and knees of your clothing, dust off that gardening sun hat, and glue a few pieces of hay to the bottoms of your pant legs - voila! Now go find a field to stand in. ;)

Celebrity

This is one of the easiest DIY costumes. Pick a celebrity who has been making the headlines lately and mimic their appearance. A few key items that are emblematic of who that celebrity is will make you instantly recognizable.

Eco-Warrior

Start stockpiling your recycled materials in preparation for this one. Create a dress or three-piece suit out of newspaper, cardboard, bottle wrappers, and the like. You won’t be spending money or buying anything new, which makes you a modern-day eco warrior.

A Natural Colorado Wonder

For a last-minute couples costume, you and your significant other can easily select a common weather event and depict it with cardboard. Go as a thunder cloud and clap of lightning, or a rain cloud and droplets. In Colorado, there’s plenty to choose from. You could also be autumn leaves, snowflakes, pinetrees, or a babbling brook!

An Occupation

Just like when you were a little kid, you can dress up as your dream job. Want to be a treasure hunter, firefighter, or pilot? Bet you have just the gear in your closet to make that happen. Add a few silly additions, like a bag of fake gold coins or a stuffed dalmation to drive the point home.

Dressing up for Halloween doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes the best costumes are the ones that are thrown together at the very last minute. Still in need of Halloween plans? Boulder County has some awesome events where you can show off your very best DIY costume. VerraWest is a short distance from downtown Longmont and all it has to offer.
