As the coronavirus pandemic persists, you may be apprehensive about venturing outside of your home. However, the latest available data suggests that outdoor spaces are the safest places to be when you’re not sheltering in place. If you’re looking forward to some outdoor fun this summer, visiting bodies of water such as beaches, pools, and lakes may be on your agenda. To keep yourself and members of your community safe, be sure to consider the following guidelines when swimming:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) asserts that physically distancing yourself from others is among the best ways to avoid the spread of COVID-19. At a minimum, you’ll want to stay 6 feet apart from people who aren’t in your household. This is especially important indoors, but it’s also recommended when visiting outdoor spaces. When you’re soaking up the sun at the beach, lake, or pool, be mindful of personal space and do your best to avoid being in close proximity to others. If it’s not possible to practice safe physical distancing due to crowds, consider coming back at a different time or day.
If you’re meeting up with people from outside your household, be sure to bring your own items. Before you depart from home, check your bag for things you’ll need at the water. Even sharing a bottle of sunscreen with those outside your household should be avoided, if possible. Although you’ve probably thought about bringing the essentials such as towels and sun protection, packing hand sanitizer is also a good idea for cleansing your hands after opening gates or other frequently-touched surfaces.
Colorado guidelines state that facial coverings should be worn in public areas, even when outdoors. You’ll need your mask anytime you’re not in the water. If you’re lounging on the sand or banks of the water while other water goers are present nearby, wearing a mask is the safest option. However, you’ll need to remove your facial covering when swimming.
Although the global pandemic has likely changed your summer plans, many outdoor activities can still be safely enjoyed. By following the guidelines mentioned here, you can feel confident in your decision to visit your favorite pools, beaches, and lakes.
