There are certain commonalities that many Coloradans have….an affinity for flip-flops, an appreciation for chapstick, and a special place in our hearts for Casa Bonita, to name a few. Of course, a love of biking makes this list, as well. If you live on the Front Range, there’s a good chance the cost of your bike rivals the cost of your car. For those who reside in Longmont, a love for biking comes with the added bonus of accessibility. There are plenty of trails to put the metal to the pedal. Here are some of our favorites:
The Lagerman Agricultural Preserve is open to bikers, birders, walkers, runners, and nature lovers. Its onsite wetlands are home to a seasonal osprey nest, allowing you to sightsee as you cycle. The preserve offers two trail options, and while both are considered easy due to their lack of steep grade, they differ in length. The Lagerman Trail is 1.6 miles while the Open Sky Loop is 4.9 miles.
Biking through the Golden Ponds Nature Area is a golden opportunity to remind yourself why you live where you do; it offers exceptional views of Longs Peak and the Front Range. The area features 2.6 miles of trails and 88 acres (including 56 acres of water). Although the area is home to a variety of wildlife, it’s best known for its waterfowl.
The St. Vrain Greenway is often heralded as the “crown jewel” of the Longmont trail system and links up to various parks, trail offshoots, schools, and commercial areas. The greenway presently runs for roughly eight miles, extending from the Golden Ponds Nature Area to the Sandstone Ranch Nature Area. However, it’s really just a preview of things to come: the Front Range Trail plan hopes to someday have a trail that runs from Wyoming to New Mexico.
Mcintosh Lake is a very well-maintained trail that is mostly paved but all-terrain tires might be necessary for the gravel and dirt paths. It offers a view of Long’s Peak, a small lake, and several benches and picnic tables along the route so you can rest and refuel. The grade is estimated to be no higher than 3%, making it a good option for anyone who doesn’t enjoy biking that feels vertical.
The LOBO trail is an excellent place to take a long bike ride on a weekend afternoon, as well as a practical way to commute to work for those whose jobs are near or in Boulder. The trail stretches 13 miles and lacks elevation, which means you probably won’t be too sweaty for your mid-morning meeting.
One of the best things about living in Longmont is that our city caters to the outdoor lifestyle. While the above are terrific options for leisurely rides, they’re certainly not the only choices. In this town, you can get on a roll almost anywhere.
