Paddleboarding is an easy, non strenuous and relaxing activity that’s perfect for a variety of fitness levels and outdoor lovers. In Colorado, finding a place to paddleboard isn’t difficult; who knows, with all this rain we’ve been having, you might even be able to find a nice puddle somewhere. With so many spots to choose from, knowing the best places to go can be a bit of a challenge. If you’re in Longmont, you’re in luck: some of the most ideal spots are local. Consider catching a wave at the following:
Don’t let the name fool you; McIntosh Lake is definitely not a place you want to bring your laptop. In fact, with so much paddleboarding to do, you won’t have time for any of your devices. McIntosh Lake is family-friendly, free to use, and offers easy access to the water. There’s little current, as well, making it a great option for anyone who's just starting to get their sea legs.
There are very few articles about outdoor adventure in Longmont that don’t mention Union Reservoir, and this one is no exception. Union Reservoir offers calm waters, plenty of shorelines to picnic or rest, and affordability. The reservoir is pet-friendly, as well, which means you can row, row, row your boat with Rover.
When it comes to paddleboarding, Lagerman Agricultural Preserve is a bit of a hidden gem. This is because it’s not as well-known for watersports, but offers many, nonetheless. If you’re looking for spectacular views and a chance to see wildlife, this preserve is one of your best bets. It also offers plenty of hiking trails, if you decide to ditch the water for the land.
The Boulder Reservoir is roughly 13 miles from Longmont but what you spend in gas money you’ll make up for in scenic beauty. Offering hundreds of acres of water and a front-row seat to the Flat Irons, Boulder Reservoir is a coveted summertime spot. If you’re totally new to paddleboarding or don’t have your own, both lessons and rentals are available onsite.
Brainard Lake is a bit of a drive from Longmont. It’ll take about an hour to get there, but the scenery through Lefthand Canyon may very well be worth it. Brainard Lake is located at the base of Indian Peaks, giving you majestic mountain views as you paddle around. It’s extremely popular on weekends, so if you’re looking for some serenity, consider a weekday instead.
Watersports are a quintessential Colorado activity. Hit the lake while summer’s in full swing; you’ll be swapping out your paddleboard with your snowboard before you know it.
