Best Longmont Trails for Autumn Hiking

Autumn in Colorado presents the perfect opportunity to lace up your hiking boots and head for the hills. Whether you have a few hours on a weekday or reserve your adventures for weekend afternoons, several trails near Longmont allow you to take in all Mother Nature offers. Consider venturing out to the following:

Rabbit Mountain Open Space

Rabbit Mountain Open Space offers several easy-to-moderate trails with minimal elevation gain. The area is abundant with wildlife, offering a prime photo opportunity for those eagle-eyed hikers looking for a terrific shot. The views are also expansive, making it one of the most beautiful spots in Boulder County.

Hall Ranch Open Space

The Antelope and Bitterbrush trail at Hall Ranch Open Space spans 4.5 miles with 1500 feet of elevation gain. You’ll enjoy a moderate workout close to Longmont and one known for its spectacular scenery. While this trail attracts many visitors in the spring, autumn is an excellent opportunity to enjoy it with fewer crowds and more serenity.

Button Rock Preserve

Button Rock Preserve is a walk-in preserve that encases the Longmont and Ralph Price Reservoirs. It has stunning views, calm trails, and tons of wildlife. If you’re angling to do some angling during your hike, you’ll even find several back-country fishing locations.

Golden Ponds Nature Area

The Golden Ponds Nature Area has been popular since the early 90s. It encompasses 88 acres and four ponds. Known for its magnificent views of Longs Peak and the Front Range, it features 2.6 miles of trails, picnic shelters, and wildlife (mainly waterfowl).

St. Vrain Greenway Trail

The St. Vrain Greenway Trail offers eight miles of versatile trails for biking, walking, and exploring nature. These trails connect several schools, commercial zones, and city parks, making them a good option for strolling when out and about. Highly scenic, you’ll enjoy views of Rogers Grove, Dickens Farm, and Izaak Walton Pond.

With cooler weather and turning leaves, fall is the ideal time to get outdoors. Try one of the above Longmont-adjacent trails to reap the season's benefits.
