All-Natural Spring-Cleaning Tips

For those health-conscious individuals who want to align their cleaning habits with their lifestyle, following a natural method promotes wellness year-round. Spring cleaning offers a clean slate - a chance to reset, wipe the past year away, and commit to healthier habits and practices. Here are a few simple, cost effective ways to tackle this year’s spring cleaning in a natural way.

De-Clutter

For many of us, we think of spring cleaning as a removing of built-up dirt and grime. However, a lot of the stress, mess, and chaos in our homes is thanks in large part to extra stuff lying around. Before beginning to formulate a plan for washing windows, wiping down baseboards, and polishing the floor, first go through your home and get rid of clutter that’s built up over the last year.

As you create a donation pile or even a garage sale inventory, optimize the closets, cupboards, and other storage areas of your home so they can be put to good use when you do decide to take up needlepoint, guitar, or carpentry.

Make Your Own Cleaners

It may seem daunting to concoct homemade house cleaners, but in fact, the ingredients are readily available. Vinegar has long been known for its cleansing, disinfecting properties while lemon, baking soda, and olive oil can be substituted in depending on the type of wash, polish, or conditioner you need.

Swap out conventional blue window cleaner to a homemade variety using rubbing alcohol, white vinegar, water, and an essential oil of your choosing. Instead of fake lemon scented furniture polish, create your own out of olive oil and vinegar. The oil conditions the wood while the vinegar disinfects, leaving your furniture appearing healthy and shiny.

Bathroom cleaners are notorious for containing all sorts of toxins. Many even suggest only handing with eye wear and gloves. Instead of a commercial brand, opt for a baking soda wash, made with warm water, lemon, and baking soda. Cover tile, grout, and caulking with this solution and let sit for a few minutes. Spray with a vinegar-based cleaner and watch the baking soda foam up, lifting mold, dirt, and mildew away with it.

Castille soap is a go-to in the natural products world and can be used in place of so many conventional cleaners. Dr. Bronner’s soaps are quickly diluted and come in a variety of scents like peppermint, eucalyptus, and lavender. Castille soap and hot water can clean virtually anything, including dirty floors, bathtubs, baseboards, and the like.

Conducting your own natural spring cleaning is much less intimidating than it sounds. In fact, most people who ditch conventional products never look back. Swapping out cleaners with ingredients you can’t pronounce for items already in the kitchen cabinet is obviously much healthier for you and your home’s occupants.
