As the warmth of the summer season departs and the chill of fall beckons, you’re likely feeling inspired to start donning fall decorations. While it’s easy to stock up on pre-made essentials from your local crafting or home goods store, nothing quite compares to making your own unique fall décor items. For inspiration and a few fail-proof ideas, read on to find simple DIY options for fall that will complement any home.

Colorful Cornucopias

When the first hint of cooler weather blows in, it’s time to switch your bright summer flower bouquet with something a bit cozier. If you’re a fan of colorful displays, you can’t go wrong with a gorgeous cornucopia of seasonal staples like silk leaves, candy-colored apples, and mini pumpkins. Whether you choose to display these goodies in a traditional cornucopia basket or a rustic wooden barrel is up to you!

Painted Gourds

If you’d like to set out an eye-catching display piece, painted gourds can be a lovely solution. When used for decorative purposes, you should opt for dried rather than fresh gourds, as the dried version of this fall vegetable will last throughout the entire season. To add a pop of color to your newly acquired gourd centerpieces, simply dip the bottom of the gourd into glossy or matte paint in the hue of your choice. Traditional fall colors like deep red or purple look gorgeous on gourds, and you can display them in a metallic bowl for maximum fall effect.

Homemade Wooden Signs

Rustic looks are becoming increasingly popular, and they’re exceptionally well suited for fall decorating. Whether you’re looking for wooden signs for specific fall holidays such as Halloween and Thanksgiving, or something general to do the trick for the entire season, wooden signs are an excellent option. Depending on your skill level and the amount of time you have to devote to a DIY project, you can choose pre-made wooden boards to paint, or start from scratch to create a custom wooden canvas. You can find pre-made wooden boards online, or visit your local home improvement store for lumber if you’re going the from-scratch route.

Pressed Fall Leaves

When you’re ready to switch out your summer wall art with something reminiscent of fall, consider collecting a handful of your favorite leaves from your own front yard or a nearby park. This do-it-yourself wall art option is a creative take on traditional paintings of fall foliage, and it’s also a fun and easy project that won’t take longer than an hour or two. After you’ve collected some richly colored leaves in different sizes and shapes, simply flatten them out between two layers of crafting paper and they’ll be ready to hang on your wall. To brighten up your home even more, select fall-themed frames for your leaf creations.

DIY Pumpkin Centerpieces

If you’re planning on hosting holiday parties this fall, you’ll need to set aside some time to plan the décor and menu. To create a lively setting for your get-together, start by giving your dining room table a colorful makeover. After you’ve chosen the perfect table runner for your taste, pick up some pumpkins or gourds from your local grocery store in any color that you like. White is a versatile color that’s easy to work with, but traditional orange pumpkins also work well for fall centerpieces. Many craft lovers choose to paint patterns on the pumpkins, but if you’re short on time or patience, placing silk leaves, synthetic fruit, or tea candles around the table still achieves a fun fall ambiance for your guests.
